Unflattering Media Pictures

By Tony on May 6, 2009
News24 — which provided all the pictures on this page — have redesigned their website and removed the galleries containing these pictures. We now have some additional images in the More Unflattering Media Pictures gallery (see menu above). We are scouring the web to find more images for you.

Why do the media companies, i.e. the news websites, choose such awful pictures of people to illustrate their articles. Politicians, business personalities, community members, celebrities and the like may not always be the prettiest or nicest. Nor do they, celebrities aside, set themselves up for the perfect shot.

But at least find pictures that do them a little justice. Mr/Mrs/Ms photo editor I am sure that there are alternatives images. Mr/Mrs/Ms photographer think a little before you shoot.A couple of today’s example from News24

Please guys, give the lady a chance to close her mouth before pulling the trigger. Yes, I know, she does not close it for very long. But play nice.
On the other hand, I don’t think that I have seen a single picture of the new Premier of the Western Cape in the last few months where her mouth is actually closed. So, maybe I am being unfair on the photographers and picture editors and this is how Helen Zille will be portrayed.

The first rule of photographing faces may be that you focus on the eyes. But the real number one rule of portrait and/or facial photography: don’t get too close to your subject with a wide angle lens.
The shnozz just gets too big and unflattering and we scare small children with the resulting pictures.
On the other hand the plastic surgeons will have a roaring trade when the pretty people see their noses in this new pose.

I am not sure what to call this expression.
Consternation? Constipation?
Irritation?
Surprise?
Not the most flattering picture of the French President.

Maybe this will become a regular feature. It is something I notice when reading the news, whether electronic of printed (although, seemingly, the printed media guys seem to exercise a bit more care).

  1. Using these kind of pictures could be a way of spicing up what might otherwise have been a dull article.

LOL, very funny pictures. The Zille one looks very animated and very much like some people I know…. you know the type, where you cant get a word in Edge-ways! The second picture is scary and the third downright disturbing.

You have got me looking at our newspapers now, I think I am going to start noticing it too hehe
